New Delhi: The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) on Wednesday organised a workshop on “Cooperative Sugar Sector in India – Current Scenario & Emerging Opportunities”, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the future of India’s cooperative sugar industry and strategies for its sustainable growth.

The workshop, organised by NCDC’s Sugar Division, witnessed participation from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF), State Cooperative Sugar Federations of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab and Uttarakhand, along with representatives from Indian Potash Limited.

The deliberations focused on the current status of the cooperative sugar sector across different states, highlighting regional challenges as well as emerging opportunities for diversification and value creation. Participants discussed measures to improve the competitiveness of cooperative sugar mills, strengthen business sustainability, and encourage value-added ventures that can enhance farmers’ incomes.

Discussions also examined the role of NCDC in supporting cooperative sugar factories through financial assistance, institutional capacity building and modernisation initiatives. Stakeholders shared best practices and exchanged ideas on adopting innovative approaches to improve operational efficiency and long-term resilience in the sector.

The workshop served as a collaborative platform for policymakers, cooperative leaders and industry representatives to identify common priorities and explore avenues for strengthening India’s cooperative sugar ecosystem. The exchange of experiences from different states is expected to contribute to more informed policy interventions and better institutional coordination. Also read how NCDC has emerged as key driver of India’s cooperative growth.

Reaffirming its commitment to the cooperative movement, NCDC said it will continue supporting the cooperative sugar sector through strategic interventions aimed at improving competitiveness, promoting sustainable growth and enabling cooperatives to adapt to changing market dynamics. The initiative aligns with the broader objective of strengthening India’s cooperative economy and creating greater value for member farmers and rural communities.
