Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah will present the “Efficiency Awards” instituted by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) on August 10 at New Delhi. These prestigious awards are presented every year to the best performing cooperative sugar mills.

These announcements were made by NFCSF President Harshvardhan Patil in New Delhi. Prakash Naiknavare, Managing Director of the Federation was also present during the interaction.

The awards ceremony will take place at 3 PM at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Janpath, New Delhi which will be attended by Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, Farmer Directors and Managing Directors of cooperative sugar mills nationwide. Additionally, ministers from the ministerial group on sugar/ethanol and senior officials related to the sugar sector from both central and state levels have been invited, according to Shri Harshvardhan Patil.

Patil also stated that alongside this event, the NFCSF’s annual general body meeting and a group discussion on two key issues affecting the sugar sector will also be held. The topics of discussion include ‘Hitech Bio Intensive Sugarcane Farming’ & ‘Govt. Policies for Strengthening of Indian Sugar Sector’. Eminent sugar experts will deliberate on these issues.

The “Efficiency Awards,” established by the NFCSF, aim to evaluate the performance of cooperative sugar factories in areas such as Sugarcane Development, Technical Efficiency, Financial Management, Highest Sugarcane Crushing, Highest Sugar Recovery, and Maximum Sugar Export. An Expert Committee headed by the Chief Director (Sugar) rigorously evaluates the mills’ performances and finalizes a total of 21 awards for the year 2022-23.

This year, 92 cooperative sugar factories from across the country competed for the Efficiency Awards, including 38 from Maharashtra, 11 each from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, 10 from Tamil Nadu, 8 each from Punjab and Haryana, 4 from Karnataka, and one each from Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

To ensure fair competition, the country’s sugar sector was divided into two groups: Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka, with high sugar recovery rates (above 10%), comprising 53 cooperative sugar factories, and the second group, with states having below 10% average sugar recovery, comprising 39 cooperative sugar factories.

Such groupings encourage factories to improve efficiency in sugar production and foster a competitive spirit. The policy of “one prize per factory” is also followed.

Bhimashankar Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd., Pune, Maharashtra won the prestigious Vasantdada Patil Award for the Best Cooperative Sugar Factory on All India Basis.

Maharashtra emerged as the top performer with ten awards, followed by Uttar Pradesh with four awards. Gujarat and Tamil Nadu each secured two awards, while Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh each received one award.
