The National Federation of Co-operative Sugar Factories (NFCSF), the Apex body for the cooperative sugar sector in the country, has announced the winners of its National level Efficiency Awards for cooperative sugar factories for the year 2022-23. NFCSF President Harshvardhan Patil announced the names of 21 cooperative sugar factories, recognizing their outstanding performance.

The selection process involved a meticulous evaluation by an Expert Committee led by Chief Director of Sugar and comprised of eminent figures from the sugar industry and state cooperative sugar federations.

The Expert Committee evaluated the performance of the cooperative sugar factories on the basis of various parameters including cane development, technical efficiency, financial management, highest cane crushing, highest sugar recovery, and maximum sugar export.

Ninety-two cooperative sugar factories from across the country participated in this year’s award selection process. Maharashtra led with 38 participants, followed by 11 each from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, 10 from Tamil Nadu, 8 from Punjab and Haryana, 4 from Karnataka and one each from Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

To ensure fairness, the Indian sugar sector was categorized into two groups based on sugar recovery rates. Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka with high recovery rates (above 10%), formed the first group with 53 participants. The second group of 39 cooperative sugar factories comprised states with recovery rates below 10%, including. As per Federation, this grouping encourages improvement in efficiency and enhances competitiveness among factories. In addition, the policy of awarding “one prize per factory” was implemented to uphold fairness.

Mr. Prakash Naiknavare, Managing Director, NFCSF stated that the award ceremony will take place in New Delhi in the month of August in the presence of eminent industry leaders.
